Description
Found throughout the northern hemisphere, the Velvet Shank (Flammulina velutipes) is edible when cooked and is a winter food source for some woodland critters. I love the way the caps shine like honey-glazed donuts. Though, how backbreaking it is to lie on your neighbours' cold porch stones in late November, freezing your legs and stomach, trying to shoot a mushroom at ground level!
